New AR Water Tower Experience at the Detroit Zoo

For more than a century, The Detroit Zoological Society has been creating meaningful connections between people, animals and the natural world. From providing engaging experiences that educate and inspire our community to putting the care and conservation of animals at the heart of everything we do and championing a healthier natural world through sustainability, we have been igniting positive change and focused on fostering connections that have lifelong impacts.

 

While the commitment to creating these connections remains unchanged, the Zoo is also ever-evolving. As the Zoo prioritizes being a force for positive change in a world where animals and nature are valued, understood and protected by all, we are excited to unveil a new brand identity that celebrates our mission.

 

Why did we make this change?

When we set out to reimagine our new visual identity more than two years ago, we knew we needed a modern and timeless design that reflects the future of our organization. Our new branding allows us to tell our story in new and exciting ways. The dynamic shapes in our logos and throughout our branding act as a canvas through which we can showcase how the DZS creates meaningful connections every day. It’ll also be a device to highlight our important conservation efforts. Conservation is at the heart of everything we do – it is the beginning and the end. This new visual design allows us to meet audiences near and far.

 

WHAT'S NEW?

The Logos!

  • The new Detroit Zoo logo features a powerful storytelling design. The Os in “Zoo” unite, inviting you to an extraordinary world where all can thrive.

  • The Belle Isle Nature Center’s logo pairs two leaf-inspired shapes that symbolize the connection between people and urban wildlife.

  • The simple and modern design of the Detroit Zoological Society logo represents our commitment to being a forward-thinking organization that uses evidence-based research to help people, animals and nature thrive.

The Water Tower Design

  • This iconic landmark has a whole new look! The new design celebrates animals and nature and will serve as a beacon of adventure for years to come.

An Augmented Reality (AR) Experience

  • See a giraffe munching on leaves, a tiger taking a morning stretch and a blue butterfly soaring over the iconic water tower — all from your smartphone’s Snapchat app! A new augmented reality (AR) experience* can be activated by visiting the mini water tower replica outside the main admission gates.

User-Friendly Websites

  • Your web experience just got better. We’ve refreshed the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center websites — and launched an all-new website for our parent brand, the Detroit Zoological Society.

A Mobile App

  • From an itinerary feature to plan your next visit to an interactive map, navigating your next adventure here at the Zoo just got a whole lot easier. Download it today on your app store!

A Larger-Than-Life Photo Op!

A Nostalgic Collection

  • We’re not forgetting our roots. That’s why we are excited to partner with Rebel Nell, a woman-owned company that shares our commitment to sustainability. Through this partnership, we are repurposing remnants of the artwork that covered the water tower for three decades into a nostalgic jewelry collection.
