The Troy Historical Society will host a free Summer Kick-Off
Open House at the Troy Historic Village on Tuesday June 4 from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
Visitors are welcome to explore the Village’s eleven
historic buildings, including 1837 Niles-Barnard House, which was moved to the
Village in 2011 and is not usually open to the public during regular hours.
Guests will enjoy the sounds of 19th-century music performed live by the Dodworth Saxhorn Band. The group only plays brass and percussion instruments that were built in the 1800s, for a more authentic sound. Music is generously sponsored by the Cook Family.
Refreshments will be available for purchase from Hearth,
Wood, Fire Pizza Food Truck and Detroit Metro Ice Cream. Coffee is provided
free courtesy of Tim Hortons - Troy. Guests are encouraged to enjoy dinner
picnic-style outdoors on the picturesque Village Green.
“One of the best parts about this event is that we are
joined by so many great community partners,” says Troy Historical Society
Trustee Ken Heck. “The whole community comes together to enjoy the Village and
find out what will be happening all around Troy this summer.”
Guests
can visit community partners’ tables for swag and to learn more about upcoming
events in Troy. Community partners include City of Troy, Troy Fire Department, Troy
Police Department, Stage Nature Center, Troy Garden Club, Kiwanis Club of Troy,
Troy Community Foundation, Troy City Clerk’s Office, Troy Public Library, Troy
Parks & Recreation, Troy R.Y.D.E., Troy Youth Soccer League, Troy Women’s
Association, League of Women Voters, and Jenna Kast Believe in Miracles
Foundation.
The Summer Kick-Off Open House also coincides with a new
Village exhibit, titled How Does Your Garden Grow? This indoor/outdoor exhibit
highlights the ways in which a walk around Troy now looks nothing like it did
50, 100 or 500 years ago.
“With a population of nearly 90,000 and all the modern
conveniences, our homes, gardens, and green spaces are used much differently
today,” says Troy Historic Village Executive Director Jennifer Peters. “This
exhibit invites guests to take a walk around the Village to see how Troy’s
landscape has changed, why that may have happened and what it means for us
today.”
Guests are encouraged to park at the Troy Community
Center (3179 Livernois Rd., Troy) and ride the complimentary shuttle to the
Village, courtesy of Troy R.Y.D.E. Registration is not required to attend
the Summer Kick-Off Open House, but more information about the event is
available at www.TroyHistoricVillage.org
and 248-524-3570.
