THE ARC OF OAKLAND COUNTY ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF ADVOCACY RESOURCE CENTER
TROY, MI
09/27/2023 02:39 PM

Troy, Michigan – The Arc of Oakland County’s Executive Director, Dawn Calnen J.D., announced that they will be expanding their office space to create an Advocacy Resource Center for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. The Advocacy Resource Center is set to open in the Fall of 2023.

The creation of the Advocacy Resource Center will provide individuals and families with a space to receive guidance and one on one assistance in a range of areas. The Arc of Oakland County staff members will be trained to support people in applying for entitlements and services, benefits counseling, access to educational materials and more. Direct Support Professionals will also have access to readily available computers in order to complete their required trainings.

“We’re really proud that last year we were able to assist 1,500 families through our advocacy services,” said Calnen. “But in Oakland County, estimates indicate there are more than 20,000 individuals with developmental disabilities, so we know that the need is out there to help so many more.” The Advocacy Resource Center will allow The Arc of Oakland County to do that.

Once opened, it is anticipated that the new space will be staffed during normal business hours, as well as one evening per week and one Saturday per month to maximize availability to the community.

The Arc of Oakland County is 501(c)(3) non-profit that advocates for the rights and full participation of all children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization strives to improve systems of supports and services; connect families; inspire the community and influence public policy. For more information, visit www.thearcoakland.org.
