Detroit Zoological Society hosting special media preview on Sept. 23 to reveal new programs and exhibits
The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) is pleased to announce that the Belle Isle Nature Center (BINC) will reopen to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 28. This marks the first time the BINC will open its doors since closing in March 2020.
Members of the media are encouraged to attend a special preview event on Friday, Sept. 23 to capture B-roll of the newly renovated BINC and interview key DZS stakeholders.
Important note: News of the BINC’s reopening date is under embargo until 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The state-of-the-art facility, nestled on five acres on the northeastern tip of Belle Isle State Park, has undergone transformative renovations since shutting down at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. These new experiences give visitors the opportunity to connect with nature – while also learning how to celebrate and save wildlife and wild places found in their own backyards and communities.
New and improved additions to the BINC include:
- A major renovation of the entrance lobby, featuring reclaimed materials from the old Belle Isle Zoo;
- A Sewer Tunnel Walk-through allowing visitors to learn about and explore the areas where city infrastructure and wildlife intersect;
- Expansive habitats for animals who call the BINC home, including turtles, mudpuppies, bullfrogs, snakes and urban woodland reptiles, and;
- An expanded and upgraded Nature Play Area to continue BINC’s successful Nature Tots programming.
